Get with the Program - SPF is your best friend
Let’s talk about sunscreen. We’ve all heard we should wear it, but many of us still skip it—especially when it’s cloudy, or we’re “just running out for a bit.” But here’s the real deal: SPF isn’t just a summer thing, and it’s definitely not optional if you care about your skin.
As someone who juggles life, kids, errands, I’ve learned that protecting my skin has to be simple, smart, and a daily habit. So let’s break down the truths about SPF—no fluff, just facts that can keep your skin healthy and glowing.
SPF Is a Year-Round Essential
One of the biggest myths out there? You don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days.
Truth: Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds. So yes, even on overcast days, your skin is still being exposed.
Whether it’s spring, summer, fall, or winter—SPF should be the final step in your morning routine every single day.
Makeup With SPF Isn’t Enough
That foundation or moisturizer with SPF 15 might feel like you’re doing the right thing, but it’s probably not cutting it.
Truth: Most people don’t apply nearly enough makeup to get the SPF protection listed on the label.
If you’re relying on SPF in makeup, layer it over a proper sunscreen for full protection. Aim for SPF 30 or higher with broad-spectrum protection (that covers both UVA and UVB rays).
SPF Doesn’t Mean You Won’t Tan (or Burn)
Some people skip sunscreen because they still want to “get a little color” or golden
Truth: SPF doesn’t completely block the sun—it filters it. You can still get a tan, and yes, still burn if you’re not applying enough or reapplying.
And here’s the bigger truth: There’s no such thing as a safe tan. Even a “base tan” is a sign of skin damage.
You Probably Aren’t Applying Enough
One of the most common mistakes? Using too little sunscreen.
Truth: You need about a nickel-sized amount for your face alone, and a full ounce (about a shot glass) to cover your body. Reapply every 2 hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming.
*Bonus tip: Don’t forget your ears, lips, neck, chest, and the tops of your feet—these areas are often missed and prone to sun damage.
SPF Helps Prevent Aging (and Skin Cancer)
Want glowing, healthy skin as you age? SPF is your best friend.
Truth: Daily sunscreen use can significantly reduce signs of aging—like fine lines, dark spots, and loss of elasticity. More importantly, it’s one of the best tools we have to protect against skin cancer.
The earlier you make SPF a habit, the better—but it’s never too late to start.
Remember: Keep It Simple and Stay Consistent…
You don’t need a 10-step skincare routine to have beautiful skin, but SPF should always be one of those steps. Whether you’re a busy mom, working long hours, or soaking in sunshine on a beach trip, sunscreen is one of the easiest ways to take care of yourself.
Find one you love, apply it daily, and teach your kids to do the same—it’s a small step with powerful protection.
